"In the last six months, we are seeing from China many more products where it is hard to find non-compliant parts," Soldertec marketing manager Tom Perrett told EW. There are more products that pass all the tests, but Perrett added: "These are still a fairly low percentage of the total."

NEC Europe expands distribution deal with Avnet Memec Specialist distributor Avnet Memec has expanded its franchise agreement with NEC Electronics Europe to take in several European countries not previously covered in their long term agreement. From January 2007, the partnership will be extended to Spain, France, Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary. Italy will follow from February next year.

Samsung says DRAM demand for Q1 2007 "very strong" Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research) forecast "very strong" demand for computer memory chips for the first quarter of 2007, thanks to the much-awaited launch of Microsoft's new operating system, Vista, in January. Chu Woo-Sik, senior vice president of investor relations, also said that it expected mobile phone sales in the first quarter of 2007 to be greater than the fourth quarter of 2006. "Our DRAM (dynamic random access memory chip) orders for Q1 are very strong, considering the seasonality aspect. We have most of the orders for Q1 as PC OEMs (original equipment makers) are ordering to be Vista-ready," Chu told Samsung Tech Forum 2006 in Singapore.

Intel announces volume shipments of 65nm NOR flash IC Intel Corp. announced during last week's Intel Developer Forum in South Korea what it touts as the industry's first volume shipments of 65nm NOR flash Multi-Level Cell (MLC) chips, including a 65nm,1Gbit monolithic part for cellphones. The new products are based on Intel's StrataFlash Cellular Memory (M18) architecture and are drop-in compatible with the company's high-volume, 90nm-based flash chips, ensuring cellular OEMs of easy migration.
